Lab Worker Dies From Plague
Nearly 200 people under medical observation in Siberia's Irkutsk region after a laboratory worker died from plague. The worker had accidentally broken a test tube containing live bacteria while collecting samples for testing.

A laboratory worker in Siberia's Irkutsk region has died from plague, prompting health authorities to place nearly 200 people under medical observation. Alexei Tsydenov, head of the neighboring republic of Buryatia, confirmed the worker's death from an unspecified form of plague.
The worker, Daria Sh., had told medical staff that she accidentally broke a test tube containing live bacteria while collecting samples for testing. She was hospitalized with symptoms of severe pneumonia and died after being placed on a ventilator.
At least 197 people who may have had contact with the worker have been placed under medical isolation, including more than 100 in hospital wards. The Shelekhov district hospital where the worker was treated has been placed under quarantine.
Irkutsk region Governor Igor Kobzev has urged the public to remain calm, saying all identified contact persons have been placed under medical observation and show no signs of illness. Planned public events in Irkutsk have been canceled.
The suspected infection is pneumonic plague, which affects the lungs and can spread between humans through respiratory droplets. Tsydenov said the worker's infection was unrelated to his region and there are no plague outbreaks in the republic.
A special commission will assess the situation at the Shelekhov district hospital. Law enforcement has opened a criminal investigation into potential health safety violations resulting in death.
Russia's national public health and consumer rights agency Rospotrebnadzor is coordinating emergency containment measures with local authorities.
