Malawi's hospitals are struggling with a shortage of essential medicines, as stolen government drugs are being sold on the market. Anthony Masamba, chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Health, says some of the missing medicines are being sold at Kariakoo Market in Tanzania.

Masamba claims that medicines such as Panadol and amoxicillin, marked as property of the Malawi Government, are being sold at the market. He describes the situation as 'dire', with hospitals running out of drugs.

The national availability of essential medicines stands at 75 percent, a significant improvement from four years ago when it was at 41 percent. However, at central hospitals, the availability is as low as 18 percent.

Masamba says that theft of drugs happens at different layers of the supply chain, including sole-sourced procurement and 'drug privilege', where medical practitioners steal medicines. He also alleges that some pharmacies and medicine-producing companies collude in the theft.

The committee will conduct an investigation to identify gaps in the procurement process and establish how drugs released to hospitals end up being sold on the market. Masamba says the committee will make recommendations based on the inquiry.

The situation is having a devastating impact on patients, with reports of deaths due to drug shortages in hospitals. Masamba says the committee will also review the Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority Act and other related laws.

The theft of drugs is not only a problem of corruption but also of desperation, with some medical practitioners stealing due to low pay and large debts. The committee's investigation aims to address the root causes of the problem.
