A stampede broke out at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, where the New Patriotic Party's National Delegates Conference was being held. At least three people sustained injuries in the incident.

The National Ambulance Service said eight participants suffered medical emergencies during the event. They were assessed and stabilised by emergency medical teams before being transported to the Kumasi South Hospital for further treatment.

Several other people who required attention were treated at the venue and discharged after receiving care. The National Ambulance Service deployed five ambulances and more than 30 Emergency Medical Technicians to the stadium to provide immediate medical assistance.

The incident occurred as delegates and supporters assembled for the party's national executive elections. The high turnout created dangerous levels of congestion at the venue, leading to the stampede.

Police officers stationed at the venue responded by intensifying crowd control measures to prevent further congestion. The Ghana National Ambulance Service personnel encountered difficulty handling through the dense crowd to reach and evacuate those who had been hurt.

The conference was convened to elect new national executives and consider proposed amendments to the party's constitution. Delegates approved a constitutional amendment making Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the party's leader.

The change means the NPP's elected presidential candidate will now serve as party leader, replacing the previous arrangement that gave the role to the National Chairman. The party is positioning itself for the 2028 general election.
