Connor Left Out of England Squad

Brian McDermott, England head coach, has omitted Jake Connor from the Rugby League World Cup squad. McDermott said he wants players who can best stick to the gameplan.

Connor, Leeds Rhinos half-back, was in impressive form this year but has been overlooked. McDermott has selected Hull KR's Mikey Lewis instead, despite Lewis having a disappointing year.

Lewis had a difficult end to the Super League season, with off-colour performances and disciplinary problems. However, McDermott believes he can get the best out of the half-back.

McDermott also made tough decisions on other players, including Warrington Wolves hooker Danny Walker. Walker will not be joining teammates George Williams, Matty Ashton, and Ben Currie in the England squad.

The England squad has no players from Super League champions Wakefield. McDermott has opted for a mix of experienced and new players, including NRL-based players like Max King, Ben Talty, and Hugo Savala.

The selections have been met with surprise and criticism, with some questioning the omission of Connor and Walker. McDermott insists he has chosen players who can execute his gameplan.

England will start the tournament in Australia on 17 October. The team will face tough competition from top nations like Australia and New Zealand.

McDermott's squad includes players like Zach Eckersley, who will collect his first caps for England if he makes it onto the field. Eckersley had an impressive season, scoring 36 tries across the 2026 season.
