Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, has won the first round of Brazil's presidential election with 47.03% of the vote.

President Lula da Silva trailed closely with 45.16% of the vote, setting up a run-off between the two candidates on October 25.

Bolsonaro's result exceeded expectations, and he is now favored to win the second round, given that some right-wing alternatives were knocked out in the first round.

The Liberal Party, led by Bolsonaro, also had the most governors, senators, and federal deputies elected, giving the party significant influence in Congress.

The election has polarized Brazil, with themes of sovereignty, crime, the economy, and corruption being top concerns for voters.

Lula, 80, warned that the choice was between democracy and 'barbarism', while Bolsonaro, 45, said he wanted to 'free the Brazilian people'.

A Bolsonaro victory would push the region further to the right and potentially strengthen Washington's hand in countering China's influence in the hemisphere.
