The US has withdrawn all its bombers from RAF Fairford, a British military base in Gloucestershire, after a suspected terror plot. A US department official confirmed the withdrawal on Sunday.

The decision to remove the bombers from the base follows a major incident on 27 September when police were alerted to three suspicious vehicles near the airbase. Five men were initially arrested on suspicion of terror offences and later released on police bail.

A sixth man, a UK-Iranian national, was also arrested and released on bail. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were strong indications that Iran had played a part in the incident, but Tehran has denied any involvement.

The US Air Force has used RAF Fairford as a forward operating location for decades. In recent months, US bombers have taken off from the base for the Middle East after the UK approved a US request to use it for defensive strikes on Iran.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the incident clearly involved the hands of a foreign actor, but did not provide further details. The UK Ministry of Defence has not commented on the withdrawal.

At least 10 B-1 bombers flew out of Fairford on Sunday, including some that arrived on rotation less than a week ago. The rapid pace of the withdrawal has heightened concerns in the area around the RAF base.

The investigation into the suspected terror plot is ongoing, with six people arrested and released on bail so far. The US and UK are working together to determine the nature of the threat and the involvement of any foreign actors.
