Former Conservative politician and novelist Jeffrey Archer has died aged 86. He died peacefully at home between writing sessions, his publisher said.

Jeffrey Archer, a former Conservative politician and bestselling novelist, has died at the age of 86. His publisher, HarperCollins, said he died suddenly and peacefully at home on Monday.
Archer was a Conservative MP for five years before serving as the party's deputy chairman. He was made a life peer in 1992 and had a successful career as a novelist, selling 300 million books in 119 countries.
Archer's political career was marked by scandal, including a conviction for perjury and perverting the course of justice in 2001. He was jailed for four years and released in 2003.
Archer returned to the House of Lords after his release and retired in 2024. His last book, Adam and Eve, is set to be released this week.
Kate Elton, HarperCollins UK's chief executive and Archer's editor, described him as a 'master storyteller' and said it was a privilege to work with him.
Archer was due to attend the Cheltenham Festival on Saturday to discuss his final novel. He and his wife Mary had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year.
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch said Archer's death was a 'huge shock' and that he had sent her a message of encouragement just that morning.
