US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has arrived in Iceland for a four-day NATO tour to discuss security, defense, energy, and economic cooperation. Rubio will meet with Icelandic officials in Reykjavik to discuss Arctic security and economic cooperation.

The visit follows a security pact sealed between Washington, Denmark, and Greenland two weeks ago. The pact aims to bolster Arctic security and consolidate US control over Arctic routes.

Iceland has no standing army but has long cooperated with the US and NATO on security due to its strategic location in the North Atlantic. Former US ambassadors to Iceland say Rubio can expect Reykjavik to be receptive to further security cooperation.

Robert Gerber, a former US diplomat, says Rubio's visit could follow up on commitments discussed at a September meeting of Arctic countries. Those discussions included commitments by Arctic partners to take greater responsibility for their own security and the protection of critical infrastructure.

Icelanders voted against reopening European Union accession talks in late August. The country has never had a military since gaining independence in 1944 and relies on agreements with NATO and the US for security.

Rubio will also travel to Athens and Lisbon to discuss defense, energy, and technology cooperation with Greek and Portuguese officials. The visits aim to strengthen US cooperation with NATO allies in the face of growing security concerns over Russia's military activity.

The last US Secretary of State to visit Iceland was Antony Blinken in 2021. Rubio's visit is seen as a significant step in strengthening US-Icelandic security cooperation and consolidating US control over Arctic routes.
