The 20th Asian Games in Japan ended with a closing ceremony, despite facing logistical issues and sparse crowds throughout the event. More than 50 world records were set during the Games.
Global Newsflix 2 min readThe 20th Asian Games in Japan came to a close on October 4 with a 90-minute closing ceremony at the Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya.
The ceremony paid tribute to the achievements of athletes who competed at the Games, including a segment with parkour performers in cherry blossom-inspired costumes.
China topped the overall medal tally, with more than double the number of gold medals of second-placed Japan. Singapore's athletes ended the Games with two golds, courtesy of sprinter Shanti Pereira and mixed martial arts fighter Tiffany Teo.
The Games saw several historic feats, including Pereira becoming the first woman to win the 200m twice, and golfer Shannon Tan securing the country's first golf medal with a bronze.
Despite the successes on the field, the Games were marred by logistical issues, including a shortage of accommodation and transportation problems. Organisers formally apologised to the South Korean delegation after North Korea's national anthem was mistakenly played before a men's hockey match.
The Olympic Council of Asia reported that more than 50 world records were broken in sports including swimming, shooting, and weightlifting, and more than 70 Asian records were surpassed.
The torch was handed to organisers of the next event in Doha 2030, marking the end of the 20th Asian Games in Japan.
