Police fired tear gas and water cannons at protesters across France on Tuesday, as more than a quarter million students, parents and teachers took to the streets to demand more funding for public schools.

The protests, which started as a demonstration in support of striking teachers at a suburban high school to the north of Paris, have snowballed into a national crisis.

Demonstrators are calling for improvements to the education system, including replacing absent teachers, reducing class sizes and overstuffed timetables, and bridging the inequality gap between schools in different areas.

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has suspended high school classes across France for the rest of the week as the protests continue.

There have been reports of violence from protesters, but heavy-handed police methods have been severely criticized, with one 16-year-old boy losing sight in his right eye and a lycée student losing his hand at a demonstration.

Helen Massy-Beresford, a mother of a student in Paris, says the demands of the protesting high school students are reasonable and worth taking to the streets for.

The protests have led to more than 400 schools being closed preventively, with over 6,100 arrests made in the last few weeks.
