US President Donald Trump has announced the creation of a new taskforce focused on artificial intelligence, which will be led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton. The taskforce, called the Super Intelligence Force, will work to ensure the US continues to lead in AI development.

The taskforce will coordinate the federal government's engagement with consumers, public interest groups, religious organizations, critical infrastructure providers, and AI companies. It will report directly to the president and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson, Undersecretary of Defense for Research Emil Michael, and Director of the Office of Personnel Management Scott Kupor will also be part of the taskforce. The group has 120 days to report on the risks and opportunities from AI and recommend the federal government's role.

The announcement follows a White House meeting with AI industry leaders, including OpenAI President Greg Brockman and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Participants agreed to voluntary measures covering oversight of AI model development and safety measures.

Jay Clayton has previously said that AI is both an opportunity and a threat, and that the government needs to get a handle on it. He has pointed to oversight frameworks used in financial markets as a possible model for cooperation between government and industry.

Senator Mark Warner cautiously welcomed the appointment of Clayton, noting that the administration has resisted meaningful safeguards without offering a serious alternative for addressing national security risks posed by AI systems.

The taskforce's creation follows growing pressure from prominent figures in the industry to tighten regulation of AI technology. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has argued that the benefits of AI justify accepting some of its risks, and that the technology should remain accessible to the public.

Three perspectives

Neutral

The creation of the taskforce is a response to growing concerns about the risks and opportunities posed by AI technology. The taskforce's recommendations will be closely watched by industry leaders and lawmakers. The US government's approach to regulating AI will be an important factor in shaping the development of the technology.

Positive

The taskforce's creation is a positive step towards addressing the risks and opportunities posed by AI technology. The group's diverse membership and mandate to assess technology risks could lead to more effective regulation and oversight of the industry. This could help to build public trust in AI and ensure that its benefits are realized.

Negative

The taskforce's creation has been criticized for not going far enough to address the risks posed by AI technology. The reliance on voluntary measures and the lack of clear regulatory framework could lead to inadequate oversight and potentially harmful consequences. The taskforce's recommendations may not be sufficient to address the concerns of lawmakers and industry leaders.
