The South African Weather Service has forecast cloudy and cool conditions for Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo, while the North West and Free State will see partly cloudy skies. All five provinces can expect isolated showers and thundershowers throughout the day.
Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela has directed the department and its entities to intensify monitoring of the impact of the weather on transport infrastructure and services. The province has experienced continuous downpours since the start of the week, with the risk of flooding increasing in some areas.
Maintenance and response teams are on standby to deal with flooding, damaged road surfaces, drainage problems and other weather-related hazards. Motorists have been urged to reduce their speed, drive with caution and increase following distances.
The Northern Cape will be fine and cool to warm but hot in places, becoming partly cloudy to cloudy in the afternoon. The Western Cape will experience morning fog patches and mist along the south-west coast, spreading along the south coast from the afternoon into the evening.
The Eastern Cape will have morning fog patches in the south, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot, becoming cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers over the interior. KwaZulu-Natal will have fog over the interior with isolated showers and rain in the extreme north-east in the morning.
Gauteng's transport network is being closely monitored as persistent heavy rain increases the risk of flooding and weather-related disruptions across the province. The department is also monitoring possible disruptions to Gautrain services resulting from the inclement weather.
Contractors are assessing and carrying out repairs to dysfunctional streetlights along provincial corridors. The department is engaging the relevant structures to ensure that weather-related disruptions are managed effectively and that commuters receive timely and accurate information.
