Germany Pledges $1.1bn Aid to Ukraine
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visits Kyiv amid air raid sirens, pledging strong support as Russian strikes disrupt the capital. Merz announces new military aid and funding for energy sector repairs.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on Sunday, marking a significant show of support for Ukraine as Russia escalates its attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Merz's visit was met with the sound of air sirens and explosions, as a Russian drone struck a key bridge in Kyiv, damaging a road and disrupting the supply of hot water in the area.
The German chancellor pledged $1.1bn in military aid to Ukraine, as well as $394m to repair damage to the energy sector. He also announced plans to jointly produce drones with Ukraine that can travel over 600 miles.
Merz was accompanied by his economy minister and executives from several large German companies, including Siemens Energy and Diehl Defence. The companies signed 14 agreements with Ukraine worth approximately $7.7bn.
The agreements include a deal for the supply of IRIS-T air defence missiles and radar equipment. Merz said Germany's support for Ukraine is not only about protecting the country's territorial integrity but also about ensuring Europe's security.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Merz for Germany's support, saying that Kyiv's citizens are going through 'terrible nights and days' due to the ongoing Russian attacks.
The visit comes a day after Russia warned foreign diplomats and nationals to leave the capital to avoid getting hurt. Russia's Ministry of Defence has promised to intensify strikes on Ukraine.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine is now in its fifth year, with both sides increasing the number of drone and missile attacks on infrastructure, logistics, and military sites in recent months.
