Scientists at MIT have found a star that is slowly consuming a closely orbiting brown dwarf, a planet-like object that is more massive than a planet but not quite as big as a star.

The system, named ZTF J0440+2325, is located within the Milky Way galaxy, roughly 300 light years from Earth.

The star and the brown dwarf orbit each other every 86.65 minutes, with the brown dwarf overflowing onto its companion and striking the surface of the red dwarf, heating a large hot spot at the point of impact.

Jamie Williams, a Ph.D. student at the University of Warwick, says the observations seek to understand the effect stars have on the planets that they host.

The discovery provides a new way that stars can interact with planetary companions, with the rate of consumption suggesting a slow process that could carry on for hundreds of thousands or billions of years.

Astronomers have also observed a white dwarf with unusual chemical composition, a clue that the dwarf was consuming a planet that had formed after its sun's death.

The findings suggest that planetary systems can experience a rebirth, a phenomenon astronomers haven't observed in our solar system before.
