Lab Worker Dies of Plague
A 28-year-old researcher in Siberia has died of a disease suspected to be a form of plague released by a laboratory accident. Nearly 200 people are under medical observation.

A researcher at the Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute of Siberia and Far East has died after being diagnosed with a pneumonia of unknown origin. Russian authorities say the situation in the region is stable.
The 28-year-old woman, identified as Daria Sh., worked in a laboratory at the institute and may have died of plague, according to Alexei Tsydenov, the head of the neighboring republic of Buryatia.
Tsydenov said there were no plague outbreaks in the republic, including in areas bordering Mongolia. The woman had not visited the republic, and her infection was unrelated to the region.
The woman reportedly told medical workers that she had accidentally broken a test tube filled with live bacteria while collecting samples. She was hospitalized with symptoms of severe pneumonia and died after being placed on a ventilator.
At least 197 people who may have had contact with her have been placed under medical isolation, including more than 100 in hospital wards. Authorities have canceled planned public events in Irkutsk and opened a criminal investigation into potential health safety violations.
Irkutsk region Governor Igor Kobzev urged the public to remain calm, saying all identified contact persons have been placed under medical observation and show no signs of illness. Their laboratory test results are negative.
The institute studies especially dangerous infectious diseases related to surveillance, treatment, and biological safety. The incident is being investigated by Russian authorities.
