Besigye Release Talks Underway
Winnie Byanyima demands bail for her husband, says his health and freedom are not for negotiation. Gen Salim Saleh leads efforts to resolve treason case

Winnie Byanyima, wife of Col Dr Kizza Besigye, has spoken out on the reported negotiations to secure her husband's release from prison. She warned against using his health and freedom in political bargaining.
Byanyima said her husband maintains his innocence and has entered into no negotiations or plea bargain. She demanded bail so that he could return home, receive care and recover.
The family's main concern remains Besigye's health, Byanyima said. She disclosed that the defence had submitted a fifth bail application and appealed to the trial judge, Justice Emmanuel Baguma, to schedule a hearing.
Gen Salim Saleh is leading the talks to have Besigye freed, involving figures from the National Resistance Movement, the People's Front for Freedom, the Forum for Democratic Change, religious leaders and senior citizens.
Byanyima said any wider political dialogue should proceed on its own merits, without using her husband's freedom and health as bargaining chips. She encouraged Saleh to pursue a genuine national dialogue openly and inclusively.
The treason trial against Besigye and his co-accused, Obeid Kamulegeya Lutale, is ongoing. Byanyima's comments challenge suggestions that Besigye himself has joined the reported negotiations.
A committee of eminent persons will support Saleh in the talks, while an opposition team will engage with his group. The purpose of the committee is to help Saleh handle the Besigye release matter.
