Observers in the central and western US won't see Jupiter disappear, but can catch the reappearance around 3 a.m. MDT. The event will be visible in darkness across most of the eastern and central US and parts of southern Canada.

The Moon will cover Jupiter and its moons for about an hour. The event can be watched with the naked eye, but binoculars or a telescope will yield a more detailed view.

Long Island state parks will remain open during the nighttime hours for viewing of the lunar occultation of Jupiter. There will be no charge and the normal star gazing permit will not be required.

The waning crescent moon will pass directly in front of Jupiter, blocking it from view. This event is worthy of taking a photo with a telescope, smartphone, or digital camera.
