Cornell University Protests
Students and faculty members protest the university's handling of a gang rape allegation, calling for the president's resignation. The alleged incident occurred at a fraternity house in 2024.
Hundreds of students, staff, and members of the public gathered at Cornell University's Ithaca campus to protest the university's handling of a gang rape allegation.
The alleged incident occurred in 2024 at the Chi Phi fraternity house, where a woman, known as Jane Doe, claims she was gang raped by several men after being pressured into drinking and taking drugs.
The protest comes after Jane Doe filed a civil lawsuit against the university, seven former students, and the fraternity, prompting a new criminal investigation.
Students attending the protest wore purple ribbons and held signs with messages such as 'support survivors, expel rapists' and 'Justice 4 every Jane Doe'.
Suzie Barrows, a sophomore at Cornell University, attended the protest and said the incident had been re-traumatising for her due to her own experience of sexual assault.
Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff and Ryan Lombardi, vice president for student and campus life, addressed concerns about sexual misconduct at a meeting with the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly.
Kotlikoff said the university is bound by federal law and that its processes are 'trauma-informed', but acknowledged that sexual misconduct can be associated with Greek Life.
Jane Doe's lawyer, Thomas Giuffra, said she has received multiple threats of harm unless she withdraws her lawsuit.
