Zambia's government will sign a $1.5 billion health funding agreement with the US on Thursday, Health Minister Roma Chilengi said. The agreement was stalled earlier due to concerns over data privacy and access to critical minerals.

The US is a major funder of HIV/AIDS, malaria, and public health programmes in Zambia. Other African nations have also had reservations about sharing medical data with the US as a condition for receiving funds.

Chilengi said data-sharing will be limited to providing information required to monitor and evaluate US-funded health programmes. A clause that would have required Zambia to share patient medical specimens with the US has been removed.

The minister also said there is no mention of critical minerals in the health pact. He was not aware of a separate critical minerals agreement being negotiated with the US.

African countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, have signed similar US health pacts. These agreements are part of the US's changed approach to health funding in Africa.

The agreement will see the US provide $1.5 billion in health funding over five years, while Zambia will spend $2.1 billion. The funding will support various health programmes in the country.

Chilengi announced the agreement at a press conference on Tuesday. The signing of the agreement is expected to take place on Thursday.
