Jamaica has seen a significant decrease in murders, with a 24 per cent reduction this year compared to the same period in 2025. As of October 6, there were 407 homicides recorded across the country.
Dr Horace Chang, the Minister of National Security and Peace, announced these figures during a ministerial statement in the House of Representatives. He noted that this compares to 534 murders during the same period last year.
Between July and September, Jamaica recorded 123 murders, which is the lowest quarterly figure in over three decades. September also saw the lowest monthly total in over 30 years, with 36 murders.
Chang highlighted that five of the first nine months of 2026 have seen the lowest monthly murder totals in over three decades. The first three quarters of 2026 have also seen the lowest quarterly murder totals.
The Minister attributed the decrease in murders to the Government's policies, including increasing the strength of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and providing resources to police officers. He commended the leadership and members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force for their work.
Chang expressed that the country is seeing a sustained reversal of the trend of high levels of murder and violence. He said that just a few years ago, 123 murders was a figure that could be recorded in a single month, but now it represents an entire quarter.
The Minister also commended the brave men and women on the front line, saying their courage, professionalism, and sacrifice continue to drive the gains in reducing murders. He said their service must be recognised and appreciated.
