A team of astronomers, led by Jamie Williams, a doctoral candidate at the University of Warwick, has identified a second-generation planet candidate orbiting a white dwarf star, HS 0209+0832.

The discovery was made by analyzing the atmosphere of the white dwarf star, which showed a unique composition of elements, including niobium, zinc, and copper, that are not typically found in first-generation planets.

The planet is believed to have formed from the material ejected by the white dwarf star during its giant phase, and its atmosphere is being evaporated by the star's strong radiation.

The detection of a sinusoidal photometric period of 4.399 days, with an amplitude of 0.120%, suggests that the planet is undergoing a day-night cycle or has a transiting cometary tail.

This discovery provides evidence that close-in planets can form around white dwarf stars after the main sequence, challenging the traditional view of planetary formation.

The white dwarf star, HS 0209+0832, has an effective temperature of 35,000 K and a cooling age of approximately 5 million years, making it a relatively young and hot star.

The discovery of this second-generation planet candidate has solved a long-standing mystery surrounding the unusual chemical composition of the white dwarf star's atmosphere, which was first observed by the Hubble Space Telescope in 1999.

Key facts

  • Second-generation planet candidate discovered orbiting white dwarf star HS 0209+0832
  • Planet's atmosphere enriched with trans-iron elements, including niobium, zinc, and copper
  • Planet believed to have formed from material ejected by white dwarf star during its giant phase

Three perspectives

Neutral

The discovery of this second-generation planet candidate provides new insights into the formation and evolution of planetary systems. Further research is needed to confirm the existence of this planet and to understand its properties. The finding has significant implications for our understanding of the universe.

Positive

The discovery of this second-generation planet candidate is a groundbreaking finding that opens up new possibilities for the study of planetary formation and evolution. It suggests that the universe is more complex and dynamic than previously thought, with new worlds forming in unexpected ways.

Negative

The discovery of this second-generation planet candidate raises questions about the stability and longevity of planetary systems. The fact that the planet's atmosphere is being evaporated by the white dwarf star's radiation suggests that its survival is uncertain, and its existence may be short-lived.
