Novak Djokovic battled back from a set down to defeat top seed Alexander Zverev in the China Open quarterfinals. The 39-year-old Serbian won 4-6 6-4 6-4 against the world number two.

Djokovic's victory dented Zverev's quest to finish the year as the world's number one-ranked player. The Serbian will play Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals.

Djokovic initially struggled to handle Zverev's power, and the German secured the first set after capitalising on a break in the first game. However, Djokovic managed to work his way back into the contest.

The turning point came late in the second set when Djokovic broke at 5-4 to level the match. The Serbian struck again at 5-4 on Zverev's serve to seal victory in the third set.

Djokovic's win moved him past Rafael Nadal for the best start at a single event, with Nadal having won his first 31 matches at the French Open. Djokovic is a record six-time champion in Beijing.

Djokovic said he still plays for moments like these, competing against the best players in the world. He added that it has been a struggle this year due to different reasons, but he is still grinding and making the youngsters work for their money.

Djokovic will face Medvedev on Monday. Medvedev earlier overcame Francisco Cerundolo 7-6 (7-4) 6-3. Poland's Hubert Hurkacz also progressed to the semi-finals with a 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 win over Karen Khachanov.
