On October 6, a rare celestial event will take place as the Moon occults Jupiter, an event that will not occur again for 11 years. The waning crescent Moon, 20% illuminated, will pass in front of the planet, concealing it from view.

The occultation will be visible in complete darkness across the eastern and central US, as well as parts of southern Canada. The Moon will rise in the east at around 2:30 a.m. local daylight time, with Jupiter shining close to its sunlit side.

As the pair rises higher in the sky, the Moon will slowly draw closer to the planet, eventually covering it. The planet will reappear from behind the Moon's dark limb approximately an hour later.

The best views of the occultation will be in eastern New York State, New England, and Atlantic Canada, where the Moon will be around 20° high when it covers Jupiter. The Moon's altitude will gradually diminish as you move south and west.

To observe the event, viewers can use binoculars, a telescope, or simply look at the sky with the naked eye. The celestial pair will be bright and easy to spot in the east. A telescope would be best for close-up pictures, but using zoom or telephoto on a smartphone will also work.

The occultation will start at 4:20 a.m. EDT, and the planet will reappear at 5:24 a.m. Viewers can also look for earthshine on the Moon, which will be worthy of capturing with a smartphone or digital camera.
