Ex-German Spy Chief Arrested
August Hanning, former head of Germany's foreign intelligence service, is under investigation for passing on state secrets. He faces charges including espionage, disclosure of state secrets, attempted treason and working as a secret service agent.

German police arrested August Hanning, the former head of the country's foreign intelligence service, on suspicion of espionage and treason. Hanning, 80, was taken into custody at his home in Nordwalde near Münster.
The federal prosecutor's office said Hanning faces charges including espionage, disclosure of state secrets, attempted treason and working as a secret service agent. The office did not say which foreign intelligence service he is suspected of working for.
Another former high-ranking employee of the foreign intelligence service, identified as Manfred D, was also arrested on suspicion of providing hundreds of classified documents to Hanning after his tenure as spy chief ended in exchange for payment.
Manfred D is accused of aiding and abetting attempted treason and espionage against the state. He served as Hanning's chief of staff during his time as spy chief and later worked under him at the Interior Ministry.
The investigation into Hanning began due to his connection to a high-profile trial involving a businessman. Police are conducting searches at both suspects' properties, as well as in Berlin.
Marc Henrichmann, who chairs the German parliament's intelligence oversight committee, said Germany will not tolerate the betrayal of secrets. Konstantin von Notz, a member of the oversight committee, called for a swift and thorough investigation.
Hanning served as the head of the foreign intelligence service from 1998 to 2005. He later worked as a state secretary at the Federal Interior Ministry until 2009.
