Ireland and Israel drew 1-1 in their UEFA Nations League match on Sunday, concluding a fortnight marked by political tensions as much as football.

Ireland had faced calls to boycott the fixtures before beating Israel 3-0 behind closed doors in Hungary a week ago.

Irish coach Heimir Hallgrimsson said he was delighted the matches were finished, citing the toll they had taken on his team.

Troy Parrott gave Ireland the lead with a 39th-minute penalty, but Dor Peretz levelled for Israel immediately after the break.

Ireland wore black armbands commemorating the victims of Israel's war in Gaza, while Israel sported black armbands in memory of the victims of the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

Irish media reported that one of Ireland's coaches, Damien Doyle, had accused an Israeli player of spitting at him after the half-time whistle.

Hallgrimsson declined to provide details on the spitting incident, saying it would be looked at by a disciplinary committee.

Israel coach Ran Ben-Shimon said he had not seen the incident and would check on it.

The match was played behind closed doors in Serbia due to pressure to withdraw from the fixtures.
