A former RAF officer has died in a parasailing accident in Malta. Daryl Mayhew, 59, was on holiday with his wife Dawn when the incident occurred.
The couple had decided to try parasailing, an activity where participants are attached to a sail and towed behind a speedboat. However, powerful winds sent them plunging into the water at high speed.
The accident happened around 1pm local time on September 19, about a mile and a half off the coastal town of Saint Julian’s. Beachgoers witnessed the pair crash into the sea.
Daryl's wife, Dawn, 60, was pulled from the waves with serious injuries and rushed to hospital. She has since recovered fairly quickly, but the family is devastated by Daryl's death.
