West Indies Beat India

West Indies captain Shai Hope led his team to a record run-chase win against India in one-day international cricket in Chandigarh. Hope's unbeaten 162 guided West Indies to a memorable victory.
The West Indies achieved their highest ODI run chase, reaching 352-5 and winning by five wickets with 10 balls to spare after India made 351-7, featuring Lokesh Rahul's 129 not out.
Hope promoted himself to opening batter after Jewel Andrew injured a finger and had to go to hospital. He batted brilliantly, scoring his second successive hundred in the series.
Hope and Amir Jangoo added 109 off 99 balls for the second wicket, defying an India bowling attack that included debutant pacer Anshul Kamboj. Sherfane Rutherford added 56 with Hope, who reached 50 off 46 balls and 100 off 104 in his 21st ODI hundred.
West Indies head coach Sammy praised Hope's leadership, describing him as someone who leads through his performances and communicates clearly when required. Sammy said Hope's willingness to take on responsibility was evident when he asked him to open the innings during the chase.
Sammy credited his batters for adhering to the team's approach of building partnerships and batting deep, particularly given the challenge of chasing a big total against India. Aside from Hope, Amir Jangoo stepped up with three fifty-plus scores through the series, making 239 runs.
India had already won the three-match series after eight-wicket wins in Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati. But the West Indies, chasing for the first time in the series, overcame India for the first time since 2023.

Three perspectives
Neutral
The West Indies' win marks a significant upset in the series, with India having already won the first two matches. The team's performance will be closely watched ahead of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027. The West Indies' ability to chase down a big total will give them confidence going forward.
Positive
Shai Hope's leadership and batting performance were instrumental in the West Indies' win. His willingness to take on responsibility and lead from the front will be a boost to the team's morale. The West Indies' ability to build partnerships and bat deep was also a key factor in their success.
Negative
India's loss will be a disappointment, particularly given their strong performance in the first two matches. The team's bowling attack was unable to contain the West Indies' batsmen, and their fielding was also below par. India will need to regroup and reassess their strategy ahead of their next series.
