A 36-year-old man from South Australia has been charged after a carjacking in Sydney's CBD left a pedestrian injured. The man allegedly stole a Mazda sedan and crashed into a police vehicle and a bollard, hitting a 58-year-old woman.
A man has been charged after a pedestrian was injured in a carjacking incident in Sydney's CBD. The 36-year-old man, visiting from South Australia, allegedly stole a Mazda sedan from a woman in her 20s on the corner of King and Pitt streets around 9pm on Thursday.
The man then crashed into a police vehicle and a bollard, which struck a 58-year-old woman walking along Market Street. The woman sustained a cut to her head and was taken to hospital in a stable condition.
Acting Commander Adam Solah said the man was known to police in South Australia. He described the incident as 'extremely dangerous' and said it was fortunate there were no more serious injuries.
The man was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing under police guard. He was charged with assault with intent to take/drive a motor vehicle, negligent driving, common assault, and destroying or damaging property.
The man appeared at bail court on Friday and was formally refused bail to attend Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has mobile phone or dashcam footage is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
Police said the woman whose car was stolen was returning to her vehicle when the man allegedly climbed over the roof and bonnet and forcibly removed her from the vehicle.
The incident occurred near the Queen Victoria Building, where the 58-year-old woman had been shopping before being hit by the bollard.
Acting Superintendent Adam Solah praised bystanders who came to offer medical assistance to those involved in the incident.
