Canada Helps Mongolia Revamp Agriculture

Olds College has partnered with the Mongolian Ministry of Education to revamp agriculture education in Mongolia. The college is one of two Canadian colleges participating in the project, along with College of the North Atlantic in St. John’s, Nfld.

The partnership is part of a Colleges and Institutes Canada initiative called SkillShift, which combines the leadership of Mongolian ministries with the expertise of Canadian colleges to reform technical and vocational education and training.

The program focuses on six key occupational areas: meat and dairy processing, renewable energy, crop agriculture and agribusiness, agriculture equipment, and veterinary technician. Chris Wharton, director of industry training and continuing education at Olds College, said the college is working with local Mongolian partners to develop national vocational qualifications.

Wharton stated that the Mongolian partners are doing the heavy lifting, while Olds College provides mentorship and support. The college is sharing samples and setting up processes for the Mongolian partners to work with.

The project's primary aim is to help develop the Mongolian education system in the key areas. However, the partnership also brings opportunities for exchanging expertise. Wharton said the vision of Olds College is to advance agriculture for a better world, and the college often participates in partnerships and projects within and outside Canada.

The partnership is expected to bring benefits to both Mongolia and Canada. Wharton said the main goal is to develop national vocational qualifications for Mongolia, and the college is supporting the Mongolian partners in this effort.
