Reflection AI Launches Beam
Reflection AI launched Beam, an open-weight model it says rivals GLM-5.2, backed by Nvidia and a reported $2B war chest. Beam is an open-weight model built for business customers and developers, with a specific focus on coding and AI-agent tasks.

Reflection AI came out of a two-year stealth run on October 5, 2026, with Beam, an open-weight model the startup says closes the gap between American labs and the open models coming out of China.
The company described the release as open-weight, and said Beam advances the frontier for the Western open ecosystem. Reflection AI also called the model a workhorse, a word choice that signals the company is pitching Beam as a daily-driver tool for developers.
Beam was trained from scratch and has 501 billion parameters. Reflection says early tests put it alongside leading open models on coding and agent tasks, and that it uses roughly a quarter of GLM-5.3’s inference compute in its reasoning-efficiency comparison.
Misha Laskin, CEO of Reflection AI, said closed models are the equivalent in real estate to renting an apartment, and that an ownership market for AI is starting to form. Ioannis Antonoglou, CTO of Reflection AI, helped create AlphaGo and AlphaZero, then led Gemini’s reinforcement learning from human feedback effort.
Reflection AI was founded in 2024 by two former Google DeepMind researchers and has raised roughly $4.7 billion from backers, including Nvidia, Sequoia Capital, and Lightspeed Venture Partners.
The startup has also been locking up compute, a key ingredient needed to train frontier models capable of luring customers away from Anthropic and OpenAI.
Reflection is positioning itself against closed labs like Anthropic and OpenAI, against popular open models from Chinese developers, and against Western players like Mistral, Meta, and Cohere.
Key facts
- Reflection AI launched Beam, an open-weight model
- Beam has 501 billion parameters
- Beam uses roughly a quarter of GLM-5.3’s inference compute
- Reflection AI has raised roughly $4.7 billion from backers
Three perspectives
Neutral
The launch of Beam marks a significant development in the AI industry, with Reflection AI aiming to provide a Western alternative to Chinese open models. The company's claims about Beam's performance have not been independently verified, and it remains to be seen how the model will be received by developers and businesses.
Positive
The launch of Beam could heat up the race to build a Western answer to DeepSeek, Qwen, and Z.ai, and provide businesses and governments with another serious option for AI they can run and customize themselves. Reflection AI's focus on building an ownership market for AI could also lead to more innovation and development in the industry.
Negative
The launch of Beam also raises concerns about the safety and potential risks of open-weight models, and the fact that Reflection AI is giving away the model while planning to make money from it raises questions about the company's business model and how it will generate revenue.
