Cancer rates are rising more quickly among younger people, according to international research. Experts analyzed data from the UK, US, and Netherlands and found significant increases in early onset cases of seven cancers.

In England, the number of people under 50 diagnosed with prostate cancer has quadrupled since 2001, while early onset bowel, kidney, and uterine cancer diagnoses have more than doubled. The rate of breast cancer among the under 50s has also increased.

Mark Lawler, professor of digital health at Queen's University Belfast, described the problem as a ticking timebomb that needs to be addressed quickly. He said the overall trend is worrying, particularly given the contribution of lifestyle factors to thousands of deaths.

The World Cancer Research Fund analysis found that rates of prostate, bowel, kidney, and womb cancer have all at least doubled in the last two decades. Cases of liver, pancreatic, and breast cancer have also increased significantly during the same period.

Researchers are investigating changing diets, obesity, physical inactivity, and environmental exposures as possible causes of the trend. They stressed that no single factor can explain the trends, and changes in awareness, screening, and diagnosis may also play a role.

A major trial, PROSPECT-UK, is underway to understand the causes of the rise in bowel cancer among young people. The study aims to recruit 250,000 participants across the UK to investigate how diet, lifestyle, and environmental exposures influence risk.

Experts are calling for lifestyle changes, such as increasing fibre intake and consuming a diet high in fruits and vegetables, to help reduce the risk of cancer. They also emphasized the importance of keeping active and maintaining a healthy weight.
