Vanuatu Students in Fiji Need Support
Youth leader calls for stronger health education and support for Vanuatu students in Fiji amid HIV emergency. The Vanuatu National Youth Council president wants the government to strengthen prevention and testing measures.
Norman Kalotiti, President of the Vanuatu National Youth Council, is calling for stronger health education and support for Vanuatu students studying in Fiji. This comes after Fiji declared HIV a national emergency.
Kalotiti said the situation should not create fear or discrimination against Vanuatu students, but should prompt the government to strengthen prevention, testing and support for young people studying overseas.
The youth leader's biggest concern is the safety, health and wellbeing of Vanuatu students in Fiji. He said being educated does not automatically protect young people from health risks.
Kalotiti called for closer coordination between the government, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education and Training, the Vanuatu High Commission in Fiji and educational institutions hosting Vanuatu students.
A clear referral system should be established so students who need HIV information, testing, counselling or other health services know where to seek confidential assistance.
The Ministry of Health has strengthened HIV awareness and access to confidential testing and counselling for Vanuatu students travelling overseas. HIV and sexual health awareness sessions are included in pre-departure briefings for students.
Kalotiti urged young people to take responsibility for their health, seek reliable information, get tested when appropriate and encourage their peers to make responsible choices. He also called for an end to HIV stigma.
