Driver Jailed 12 Years for Fatal Crash
A 45-year-old driver who caused a chain collision in Tampines, killing two people, has been sentenced to 12 years and nine months in jail and banned from driving for life. The crash also left several others injured and caused lasting psychological and physical effects on the victims and their families.

Muhammad Syafie Ismail was sentenced on Monday for dangerous driving causing death, grievous hurt, and hurt. He pleaded guilty to three charges in August, with two other charges taken into consideration during sentencing.
The accident occurred on April 22, 2024, when Ismail ran a red light at high speed, causing a chain collision that killed a 17-year-old student and a 57-year-old woman. Three others were grievously injured, and five, including children, were hurt.
Principal District Judge Toh Han Li said the facts of the case justified the maximum sentence, citing the severity of the incident and the lasting impact on the victims and their families. Ismail's guilty plea earned him a 15% reduction in sentence.
The student's mother developed major depressive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after the accident, while another victim suffered PTSD and had to take on a less demanding role at work.
Ismail's sentence is one of the longest imposed for a fatal traffic incident in recent history. The next closest is an 11-year sentence for a man who drove drunk into a retiree, severing his body.
The crash also caused significant damage to property, with repairs for a damaged lamppost and green railing costing about S$1,317. The victims are separately pursuing insurance claims against Ismail.
Judge Toh ordered the sentences for the three charges to run consecutively due to public interest and overall criminality. Ismail looked down as the judgment was delivered.
