ICE Agent Shoots Man in NYC
A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot a man in the Bronx, sparking protests and calls for federal authorities to provide answers. The man, from the Dominican Republic, was alive and in hospital.
A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot a man in the Bronx on Thursday, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The agent discharged his weapon during a targeted enforcement operation to arrest a man with a prior criminal conviction.
The man, who has not been named, was from the Dominican Republic and had a prior conviction for grand larceny, and multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, possession of drugs, and weapons possession, the Department of Homeland Security said.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said it was an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation, and that early reports indicated agents surrounded the man and a five-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds.
The child was physically unharmed, Mamdani said. He also said he would ask US President Donald Trump to end ICE enforcement actions in the city.
A group of protesters gathered at the scene on Thursday evening, chanting we want justice and ICE off our streets now. New York Governor Kathy Hochul said New Yorkers were outraged and called on federal authorities to provide answers immediately.
The Department of Homeland Security claimed the man was associated with the Trinitarios, described by the US justice department as a transnational criminal group.
Mayor Mamdani said he would not stand by while ICE agents terrorise our communities. He wrote on social media that he would ask President Trump to end ICE enforcement actions in the city.
