Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said France will step up its support for efforts to eradicate Ebola in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. He made the announcement during a visit to the northeastern city of Bunia, which has been hit by the virus.

Barrot said he would propose additional humanitarian funding for Ebola during upcoming French budget discussions. France has already allocated €13.4 million to the fight against Ebola between January and July.

The Ebola outbreak in the DRC has killed more than 4,000 people out of over 8,000 confirmed cases, according to Congolese officials. Barrot praised Congolese authorities, UN agencies, humanitarian organisations, and medical workers for containing the epidemic.

A national humanitarian conference is to be held in Paris on October 6, where Ebola will be discussed. Barrot warned that the virus could quickly resurge if vigilance waned.
