Laos Seizes 521kg Meth
Drugs found on private jet from Malaysia meant for Philippines market, police say. A Singaporean pilot and Malaysian co-pilot were among 13 people arrested.
Laotian authorities seized 521kg of methamphetamine from a private jet on October 1, according to Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director Hussein Omar Khan. The drugs were meant for the Manila market in the Philippines, not Malaysia.
The chartered aircraft departed from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, Malaysia, with a Singaporean pilot, Malaysian co-pilot, and Filipino passenger on board. No cargo was carried on the flight from Subang to Luang Prabang, Khan said.
After arriving at Luang Prabang International Airport, 23 bags were loaded onto the aircraft, which were later found to contain 500 packages of methamphetamine weighing 521kg. The operation was carried out after local authorities received a tip-off on September 21.
A total of 13 individuals were arrested, including the three crew members and passenger who had departed from Subang, as well as 10 Laotian nationals. The Laotian nationals comprised three airport ground handling service staff and seven personnel operating X-ray scanning machines.
Malaysian police will send officers to Laos to investigate any syndicate links in Malaysia. The arrest of a Malaysian pilot in Laos brings the number of Malaysian pilots detained in drug cases to three since late July.
The Royal Malaysia Police has launched a comprehensive investigation into the matter. Hussein Omar Khan said it was too early to draw any conclusions on whether the syndicate could be linked to previous cases.
The security operation was launched at 1:30 pm at Luang Prabang International Airport, following a tip-off received by the provincial authorities. The private jet, bearing registration number N73GP, was found to have 21 suitcases containing white crystalline substances believed to be drugs.
