University of Warwick astronomers have identified the first second-generation planet ever found around a white dwarf. The discovery was led by Jamie Williams, a PhD student in the Department of Physics.

The white dwarf, HS 0209+0832, has an unusual chemical signature in its atmosphere, with heavy elements like zinc, copper, and niobium found at levels over 1,000 times higher than the Sun's.

Dr Nicholas Stone, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said the pattern of elements is a sign of the 's-process,' a nuclear reaction that builds heavy elements inside dying stars during their bloated red giant phase.

The team believes the most likely explanation is that the white dwarf is feeding off a newly formed, second-generation giant planet that condensed out of a new disc of material formed during the star's death.

The discovery suggests that the death of a star may not be the end for the inner solar system, as previously thought. Instead, new planets could form from the material expelled by the dying star.

The study, published in Nature Astronomy, used new techniques to identify the mystery matter in the white dwarf's atmosphere. The findings provide new insights into the formation of second-generation planets.

The presence of niobium in the planet's atmosphere is particularly notable, as it is an element that can only be synthesized in the exotic conditions that briefly emerge inside dying stars.

Three perspectives

Neutral

The discovery of the phoenix planet has significant implications for our understanding of planetary formation. Further research is needed to confirm the findings and explore the possibilities of second-generation planets. The study's results will be closely watched by the scientific community.

Positive

The discovery of the phoenix planet is a groundbreaking finding that challenges our current understanding of planetary formation. It offers new possibilities for the existence of life beyond our solar system and highlights the complexity and diversity of planetary systems.

Negative

The discovery of the phoenix planet raises questions about the long-term stability of planetary systems. The formation of second-generation planets may be a rare occurrence, and the conditions necessary for their creation may be limited.
