Covid cases in the UK have more than doubled in a month, with hospital admissions increasing by over 400%. The UK Health Security Agency reports that in August, 1,374 people contracted Covid, while in September, this number jumped to 4,589.

The agency's monthly figures also show a significant rise in hospital admissions, from 950 in August to 4,939 in September. The rate of positive Covid tests in hospitals increased from 5.9% to 7% over the same period.

More than half of the positive tests were found to be a variant of XFG, also known as the Stratus or 'American Covid' strain. This variant was first identified in January 2025 and has since spread around the world.

The World Health Organisation has identified XFG as a mix of earlier variants LF.7 and LP.8.1.2. The variant is being monitored by the UK Health Security Agency, which says that while Covid-19 activity has shown some recent increases, cases remain at low levels in the UK.

Symptoms of the XFG strain are similar to previous variants, including a sore throat, cough, fever, and hoarseness. Health officials are urging eligible people to get their flu and Covid jabs ahead of the winter months when cases typically rise.

The recent spike in cases comes as the weather begins to turn colder, with more people spending time indoors and increasing the opportunity for the virus to spread. The UK Health Security Agency is monitoring the situation and publishing its findings in regular surveillance reports.

Dr Alex Allen, consultant epidemiologist at the UK Health Security Agency, says that the agency is monitoring all data relating to Covid-19 variants in the UK and abroad. He notes that while Covid-19 activity has shown some recent increases, cases remain at low levels in the UK.

Key facts

Three perspectives

Neutral

The rise in Covid cases and hospitalizations is a concern, but health officials say that cases remain at low levels in the UK. The UK Health Security Agency is monitoring the situation and publishing its findings in regular surveillance reports. People are advised to get their flu and Covid jabs to protect themselves against the virus.

Positive

The fact that the XFG variant is being monitored and that health officials are taking steps to protect the public is a positive development. The UK Health Security Agency's regular surveillance reports provide valuable information about the spread of the virus and help to inform public health policy.

Negative

The significant increase in Covid cases and hospitalizations is a cause for concern, and the fact that the XFG variant accounts for more than half of positive tests suggests that the virus is still a significant threat. The rise in cases may put additional pressure on the healthcare system, particularly during the winter months.
