New York Declares Measles Emergency
The US state has seen 108 cases this year, with 92 recorded in rural areas since July 15. Neighboring Pennsylvania has surpassed 1,000 cases, the largest outbreak in the US in three decades.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a disaster emergency due to a rise in measles cases. The declaration will remain in effect through November 4.
As of October 3, New York has recorded 108 cases of measles this year. Seven cases were recorded in New York City and 101 elsewhere in the state.
Hochul said that 92 cases have been recorded since July 15 in a handful of rural communities with insufficient vaccination rates. She stressed the importance of vaccination, saying no one should get seriously ill or die from a vaccine-preventable disease.
The US had largely eliminated measles by 2000, but has seen several outbreaks amid declining vaccination rates. Health experts attribute the resurgence to a decline in vaccination rates below the 95 percent rate necessary to prevent outbreaks.
Officials in neighboring Pennsylvania announced that the state has surpassed 1,000 measles cases this year. Outbreaks have also been recorded in Texas, Utah, Ohio, and South Carolina.
International officials from the Pan American Health Organization are set to meet in November to determine whether the US and Mexico will retain their measles-free status.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 3,887 cases have been reported this year, up 6.2% from the previous week. This is the worst measles outbreak in the US since 1991.

Three perspectives
Neutral
The measles outbreak in the US is a concerning development, with cases rising in several states. The situation highlights the importance of vaccination in preventing the spread of the disease. Further updates on the outbreak are expected in the coming weeks.
Positive
Governor Hochul's declaration of a disaster emergency is a proactive step in addressing the measles outbreak. The expansion of vaccination efforts in rural areas is also a positive development. Increased awareness and vaccination rates can help prevent the spread of the disease.
Negative
The decline in vaccination rates is a critical issue that has contributed to the resurgence of measles. The anti-vaccination movement has been a factor in this decline, and its impact on public health is a concern. The US may lose its measles-free status if the outbreak is not brought under control.
